The person behind the words
The boring bit about credentials:
Graduate of Bath Spa University: MA in Travel and Nature Writing
Graduate of Newman University: GTP in Secondary School English Teaching
Graduate of Birmingham University: BA in Media, Culture and Society
The less boring bit about my person:
Mazda Bongo Campervan owner (freetop, because they are vastly superior)
Adoptive mother of Percy, an African Pygmy Hedgehog (adopt don’t shop)
An English Teacher who aspires to be a digital nomad and leave the classroom to rot. (Did you know that the National Education Union predicts 25% of classroom teachers will leave within the next two years?)
I have a completed manuscript of a book for children that I’m currently pitching to agents and a creative non-fiction book in the works.
And, finally, what on Earth I’m doing with a website:
Well, my ENFP personality type is ‘Campaigner’ which basically means I’m a rebel with a legitimate cause. The test confirmed it, I’m the real life Piper Chapman (OITNB) the world has been waiting for.
I firmly believe we could, and should, do what we can to create a more equitable society. What that might look like depends on the individual; a teenager might have to avoid the lure of fast fashion while Jeff Bezos might have to ignore the temptation of putting profits into tax havens rather than public services.
Expect support of hard-left politics, nerdy references to fantasy fiction, a love of roller derby, book reviews, playlists, podcast recommendations and even the odd confession to being a Swiftie. Worst of all, be prepared for the honesty of a female writer trying to smash through the glass ceiling and the patriarchy at the same time.
The whole purpose of this site is to open up conversations, not to shut them down. I can indeed be a nasty woman but this space is about trying to achieve something, so, with that in mind, there's a rule for engaging with the content you find here: sit with any discomfort you feel before you interact. Please ask yourself why something is making you defensive, instead of rejecting it out of hand. Just take a beat, before deciding I'm trying to attack or invalidate you.
I'm muddling through, just like you, I don't have all the answers. But this space is all about sharing ideas and opening dialogues in the hope of finding some. Let's talk about mental health, let's talk about stigmas, let's talk about gender identity, let's talk about race and politics... Maybe, just maybe, that way, we can be participants in creating the sort of solidarity we all crave so much for.
As multifaceted creatures, we could even have an electrifying soundtrack playing while we do it.
